(CMR) On Friday a jury took a mere 1.5 hours to convict Derrin Kennedy Ebanks (32) of 9 out of 11 charges he faced recently in a trial. Ebanks was accused of assaulting and terrorizing multiple victims in a matter of hours back in September 2020 during a drunken tirade.
A jury heard how on September 6 last year Ebanks assaulted three women at multiple locations during a drunken rampage. Prosecutor Scott Wainwright explained that he went to the home of several ex-girlfriends that night and assaulted all of them including a friend that was visiting and attempted to assist one of the women.
The vicious assaults including punching, kicking and stamping on them as well as throwing one victim into a glass table and fracturing her girlfriend's nose. That victim took the stand and explained the harrowing ordeal to the jury in detail sharing that she had let him in after texting him to see if he wanted to see his son before bedtime.
However, when he arrived banging loudly on the door the two-year-old child had already gone to sleep. He shared with her that he was in an altercation earlier that night at a bar where he had already beaten up a male friend.
Being obviously intoxicated they asked him to leave and come another time. He threw his food in his ex-girlfriend's face when she did not respond to a question about him leaving. This lead to a full-on attack on her and her friend. He dragged her by her hair and beat her in the head numerous times before throwing her into a glass coffee table where she blacked out.
He also assaulted her friend who ran off and hid in some bushes. He smashed the ex-girlfriend's phone before and her friend's phone away in some bushes. They discovered he had left his phone behind which was used to call 911.
He then left that location arriving at the home of another ex's house where he kicked a puppy across the room, attacked her and held her hostage.
During the course of the second attack, he took her glasses from her, dragged her to the bathroom by the ear and bit her nose. She attempted to escape but was dragged to the bedroom by her breasts. He eventually left the following morning claiming he did not know what happened.
Represented by defense attorney Lee Halliday-Davis Ebanks asserted that he acted in self-defense again the women one of whom he claimed as the aggressor and attacked him.
However, the jury did not buy that storyline and convicted him of multiple accounts of assault causing bodily harm (4), wounding and property damage (2). He was also found guilty of theft and wrongful confinement.
He had pleaded guilty to assaulting his male friend at the bar earlier in the evening. GBH with intent were two alternative charges on file. He is set to be sentenced at a later date in November.
Ebanks, a former footballer with the national team has other unrelated assault charges that he will be in court for in the coming weeks.
