(CMR) An injured baby dolphin in distress was rescued by the Department of Environment (DoE) volunteers, Cayman Turtle Centre (CTC) employees, and Dolphin Discovery on Saturday morning on Seven Mile Beach.
The juvenile dolphin had essentially beached itself where it was noticed and the call for help was sent out. Several vets from the CTC were the first on the scene to provide assistance followed by a 15-year veteran of dolphin husbandry.
DoE reports are that the dolphin had an old, healing wound in its side and experienced some bleeding from cuts on its fin(s) from washing ashore in the surf.
Once it was ascertained that the dolphin could survive they assisted it back to deeper waters with a DoE vessel.
They expressed gratitude to the public, St. Matthew's University Vet School, Cayman Turtle Centre: Island Wildlife Encounter and the dolphinariums for their support, especially the Cayman Turtle Centre and Dolphin Discovery Grand Cayman veterinarians who worked with the DoE team to help the dolphin out.
