(CMR) Italy beat England in a penalty shootout to win the European soccer championship Sunday afternoon. This crushed England's hopes of winning its first major title since the 1966 World Cup. This is Italy's first major title since 2006.
Luke Show for England scored an early goal before it was tied by a second-half response from Leonardo Bonucci who evened the score in the 67th minute of the game. The match remained tied 1-1 forcing them to enter the second period of extra time.
The dramatic conclusion made the air palpable at London's Wembley Stadium as the monthlong tournament concluded with Italy winning 3-2. Italy's goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma blocked the penalty kick and kept Buyako Saka at bay by preventing their final attempt at victory. Both teams collapsed into tears – of joy on the one hand and defeat on the other.
The bitter-sweet victory comes three years after Italy missed the World Cup.
Before the Euro 2020 final began some fans stormed past security barriers into the stadium. Some without tickets got into Wembley a spokesperson revealed to media.
