(CMR) First Lady of Haiti Martine Moise was airlifted to South Florida for treatment on Wednesday after she was shot during an early morning attack on her home, which left her husband, President Jovenel Moise, dead.
Martine Moise, 47, is said to be in critical condition after suffering multiple injuries during the early morning attack. It was initially reported that she died; however, it has since being confirmed that she is alive.
Moise was transported on a Trinity Air Ambulance and landed at Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport at 3:30 pm. She was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami with stable vital signs while her condition was critical, Metro reported.
She was reportedly shot in her thigh and arms and had severe injuries to her abdomen and hand.
Several world leaders condemned the assassination of President Martine Moise on Wednesday. Opponents of President Moise, who refused to give up the presidency after the end of his term, claim he made Haiti a dictatorship. The country is expected to hold elections later this year.
Prime Minister Claude Joseph said ‘Foreigners’ speaking English and Spanish broke into Moise's home around 1 am. Authorities closed the international airport and other ports of entry to prevent the escape of the attackers as the country was declared a “state of siege”. The attackers are still on the loose.
