(CMR) Tropical Storm Elsa is quickly intensifying as an intermediate advisory at 11:00 am has seen the storm intensify from 28 mph to 45mph this morning as it “races towards the WindWard Islands with higher gusts. A Tropical Storm Warning has already been issued for Barbados, Martinique, St. Luci, St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
Tropical storm conditions are expected for some of these islands as early as Friday. A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Guadeloupe, Grenada and its dependencies. Tropical storm conditions are possible in the watch areas on Friday.
Interests elsewhere in the Windward Islands, Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and Haiti should monitor the progress of this system. Additional watches with additional warnings likely later today.
Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 90 miles (150 km), mainly to the north of the center. Some additional strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours. Elsa is expected to produce rainfall totals of 3 to 6 inches with maximum totals of 10 inches on Friday across the Windward and the southern Leeward Islands, including Barbados.
In the Cayman area, light southeasterly winds and seas along with some isolated showers over the Cayman area for the next 24 hours associated with TS Elsa moving further west of our area. Radar images show isolated showers in and around the Cayman area moving northwest.
Residents in Cayman should continue to monitor this storm closes as strengthening continues. The next complete advisory will be issued at 5 p.m.
