(CMR) Thirteen drivers were arrested on suspicion of DUI, with the highest breath specimen recorded at well over double the maximum blood/alcohol level of .100 during the RCIPS continued efforts to support road safety across the Cayman Islands through Operation Quaker over the long weekend, from 11 to 14 June.

Officers carried out a number of vehicle checkpoints and high visibility patrols in various strategic locations in an effort to reduce the number of serious road collisions.

Just under 60 traffic tickets were issued, the majority of offenses attributed to speeding and persons driving with expired registration. Additionally, during the 4 day period, police responded to over 25 motor vehicle collisions in various districts, with most incidents in the George Town District.

The Cayman Brac police officers have also been carrying vehicle checkpoints and placing focus on traffic violations. Just last week, over 15 tickets were issued by the CBPS officers, the majority of which were for speeding offenses.

These results have occurred despite persistent efforts to bring awareness to the public about trending road safety issues and violations that the police have observed.

The RCIPS said this coming week emphasis will be placed on Sunday activities during the daytime and late evening hours and will target beachgoers and persons attending brunches who consume alcohol, after which they make the poor decision to drive from these various locations.

“Since the start of operation Quaker, we have received tremendous support from members of the public,” says Superintendent Brad Ebanks. “I am encouraging everyone to continue to report road violations when you see them, especially drivers who appear to be DUI or driving at a speed and manner that puts the public at risk. The best way to make reports is by calling 9-1-1.”

The RCIPS also expressed appreciation to the National Roads Authority for their support with this operation by providing digital billboards with road safety messages at key locations across Grand Cayman.

“We would also like to thank the various media outlets who have supported the operation by promoting the messages and encouraging discussions about safe driving habits with their audiences,” the RCIPS said.
