(CMR) Sylvia Felicity Lewis (56) received a suspended jail sentence for animal cruelty after appearing Tuesday morning before Magistrate Kristy Gunn along with a compensation order for CI$12,000.00 or time in default.
The judge sentenced her to 50 days imprisonment to be suspended for two years. There is also a probation and compensation order in place. She must attend any counseling sessions as required by the probation department as well as complete 180 hours of community service over the next 12 months.
She also has to pay KYD $2,000 to local dog rescue and charity One Dog at A Time by June 30, 2022 or face two months in jail if she defaults. Additionally, she was ordered to pay Canine Friends KYD $5,000 by November 30, 2022 or face 5 months in default and KYD $5,000 to the Humane Society by April 30, 2023 or 5 months in default.
Lewis is also banned from owning any animals for 10 years.
Lewis has pleaded guilty in March of last year as her trial was set to begin in what many consider the worst case of wholesale animal cruelty in the Cayman Islands. She was originally arrested in May 2019 when some 53 dogs were confiscated from her home in Prospect.
Eleven of the dogs were died or had to be euthanized because of their poor health but her guilty plea allowed her to plead guilty to only one count of animal cruelty.
