Nine DUI arrests in police weekend operations

(CMR) Nine persons were arrested on suspicion of DUI, and over 30 tickets issued to drivers found in contravention of the Cayman Islands Traffic Law, the majority for speeding violations, over the weekend as the police launched Operation Quaker.

On Friday, 28 May, the RCIPS launched Operation Quaker in response to a trend of road fatalities and other serious collisions which have occurred in recent times.

Since the launch of the operation, where officers across the Cayman Islands focused their attention heavily on traffic offenses being committed, the arrests were made. In addition, officers responded to just fewer than 20 calls for service for motor vehicle collisions during the same time period.

“It is alarming that, despite prior caution to the public, asking them to be responsible on our roads, we still have so many road violations occurring daily,” says Inspector Dwayne Jones in charge of the Traffic and Roads Policing Unit.

“We will continue to implore that the public make everyone’s safety a priority by exercising good driving habits, especially when it comes to drunk driving and speeding, which are the leading contributors to fatal collisions in the Cayman Island. We too will continue to do our part in making our roads safer for all through education, enforcement and visibility.”

Although there were several offenders, the police said there were also members of the public who supported and assisted the RCIPS with this operation. The Police received several reports made by members of the public requesting a police response to traffic violations that they had witnessed.

The RCIPS said it intends on continuing this operation in the weeks to come, targeting times, days, and locations that are known to be busy with social activities that may lead to drunk driving, speeding, and other road violations.

“On behalf of the RCIPS, I want to thank those members of the public who took the time to assist us in our efforts by playing an active role in making our roadways safer,” says Acting Superintendent Brad Ebanks, in charge of Uniform and Specialist Operations, “It is very encouraging to know that the community stands behind this initiative; our main goal is the preservation of life on the roadways. We, too, will continue to do our part in “Making the Cayman Islands Safer.”
