(CMR) The Belize Police Department is mourning the loss of one of their own after Superintendent Henry Jemmott was killed on the island of San Pedro while socializing with a prominent female early Friday morning.

Jemmott, who was commander in chief at San Pedro, was transferred to Belize City to take over command of Precinct Two earlier this month. This is one of the most problematic police areas, and Jemmott was expected to create an impact.

Commissioner of Police in Belize Chester Willaims said Jemmott's death was ” truly a sad moment for us in the Belize Police Department.”

Police reports are that Jemmott and popular businesswoman Jasmine Ascroft were on a pier in San Pedro after 12:30 am on Friday when a single gunshot was heard. Police found the female on the pier with blood on her arms and clothing. A firearm was also seen on the pier. The gun was one assigned by the police to Jemmott.

Jemmott's body was seen floating in the water with one gunshot wound behind the right ear.

Ascroft, the daughter-in-law of leading Tory donor Lord Ashcroft, is currently being questioned in relation to the shooting death of the police officer. Commissioner Williams said investigations are ongoing, and the police are awaiting post mortem results to determine if the injury was self-inflicted or otherwise caused.

“Inspection of the body should tell us a lot in terms of proximity and trajectory which will assist in determining the distance from which the shot was fired as well as whether or not Mr. Jemmott could have caused his own injury or it was caused by someone in his close proximity,” he explained.

Police said Ascroft has not been cooperative with their investigations, raising some red flags in their investigations.
