(CMR) Compass Media Ltd. is looking for applicants for the position of Publisher to work in an “innovative, fast-paced media house” according to their recent job listing on the WORC job portal. Tuesday is the application deadline for the post. The salary for the position is KYD$145,000 – 160,000 per annum.
The post requires at least 15 years of work experience in the publishing industry along with 8 years as a senior and 2 years at the publisher level. They are also requesting a Bachelor of Arts degree in English or a related degree.
The current publisher for the publication is Kathleen Capetta who arrived on the island in 2018 and took up her current position in January 2019 at Compass Media. Originally from Camden, Maine her background is in magazine publishing where she worked as the editor at large. She was also an editorial assistant and literary agent at Random House in New York.
She shared online:
“I've spent my entire career in publishing in various editorial positions. From my experience working at a literary agency, Random House, and a major regional magazine, I have developed a great eye for what makes a compelling read. The most important element to any project is how you connect to your readers — how you cut through all the noise of modern life and make them care.”
She has been at the helm of the newspaper during the tumultuous times of new ownership and the Compass, corporate takeovers and the COVID pandemic. The Compass laid off numerous people during her tenure and continues to struggle to remain relevant in the Cayman context. Her website shares that she is an expert in business model transformation and change management – both critical areas for the Compass to now be successful in.
In all likelihood, this is merely a work permit renewal. The government made it mandatory that the majority of jobs in Cayman must be advertised via its Cayman Job Portal.
Ironically she has the exact number of years of experience that this position requires.

Last summer she shared that lockdown with three kids under 10 was “very difficult” after sharing her experiences with the Press Herald, a Maine publication. Her husband is a tennis instructor.
