(CMR) Dish Direct TV Ltd. notified its customers Monday that it will be shutting down after more than 30 years of offering satellite dish services to the Cayman Islands as traditional TV subscribers continue to decline.
The company located in the Brand Source Center on Dorcy Drive in Industrial Park was the first to offer dish TV services to customers in the Cayman Islands.
The on-island dish service pioneer noted that advancements in streaming technology have led to the decision to discontinue its service effective at the end of May. They also noted that competitors in the streaming world along with Cayman's easy access to fiber along with the rising cost of doing business Post-COVID19 as additional factors.
They will provide equipment service & maintenance until June 30th, 2021.
Satellite service has fallen out of favor over the past five years in the Cayman Islands as customers turn to streaming content providers such as Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime Video. The move is not entirely surprising as both Dish Network and Direct TV across the world continue to struggle with the changing world of TV service and how to compete in the current environment.
The local provider started to offer new options like Sling TV and The Hopper about five years ago but sources indicate the response as lukewarm in an increasingly competitive streaming environment.
Other local providers in the telecommunications industry have also entered the streaming work and offer not just internet services but also live streaming TV options.
