(CMR) The St Vincent and the Grenadines community in the Cayman Islands, representing the small group of Vincentian- Caymanians as well as Vincentian nationals working here, has established two bank accounts at Cayman National Bank to accept donations to assist with the urgent humanitarian needs created by the recent violent eruptions of the La Soufriere volcano.
Persons who wish to donate may use the following information:
- Bank: Cayman National Bank
- Account name: Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Community in the Cayman Islands Support Organisation4
- Account number KYD Chequing: 011-16375
- Account number USD Chequing: 021-07816
Although the frequency of eruptions has reduced, thick layers of volcanic ash cover much of the Island, and the Red Zone around the volcano remains closed. Farm animals, pets, and crops have been negatively affected by the heavy ash, resulting in a crippling effect on the agricultural sector.
Thousands of evacuees remain in shelters, and many more are being housed by friends and families outside the Red Zone.
The COVID-19 virus compounds the situation in St Vincent and the Grenadines as the Tourism Sector has been virtually eliminated due to the pandemic. In recent days, heavy rainfall has added to the Island’s challenges with widespread flooding and landslides. The country remains under red alert with the possibility that eruptions could continue for months.
The SVG Community in Cayman said they would continue to monitor the changing priority needs through the Cayman Islands Red Cross and CDEMA, which are collaborating with the National Disaster Management Office (NEMO) in St Vincent and the Grenadines.
“Once a meaningful sum has been collected, items will be procured and shipped to NEMO based on the prioritized needs at that time,” the SVG community stated.
The SVG community said they recognize that the Cayman Islands faces its own challenges in relation to COVID-19, but that as a primarily agrarian community, St Vincent and the Grenadines is facing unprecedented challenges as a result of the continuing volcanic eruptions, exacerbated by the recent floods and landslides.
“We, therefore, ask for any assistance that members of the Cayman Islands Community may be able to make. No donation will be considered too small or too large,” the community said.
