(CMR) The eruption of the La Soufriere volcano in St Vincent has disrupted air operations in the Eastern Caribbean as the ash affects several countries.
According to Aviacionline, the main affected airports are Argyle International Airport in Kingstown, St Vincent, with at least 30 flights canceled since Friday after ash completely covered its facilities, and Grantley Adams International Airport in Bridgetown, Barbados, as a consequence of the wind direction in the upper levels of the atmosphere.
Around 70 flights were canceled at Barbados' Grantley Adams airport, the eastern Caribbean's main hub. The airport will be closed until Wednesday, April 14.
Caribbean Airlines announced the cancellation of 16 flights to Barbados from Antigua, Saint Vincent, Grenada, Ogle, Kingston, New York, and Dominica between Saturday and Sunday.
LIAT also announced the cancellation of its flights between Dominica and Barbados, Barbados and Saint Vincent, Saint Vincent and Saint Lucia, and Saint Lucia and Antigua.
American Airlines has canceled its flights to Bridgetown and Saint Lucia as this airport, despite not being closed, experienced volcanic ash. JetBlue and British Airways also canceled their flights to Barbados.
The La Soufriere volcano erupted on Friday and continued erupting over the weekend with a large explosion Monday morning. The National Emergency Management Organisation of St Vincent and the Grenadines (NEMO) said the dome collapsed, and pyroclastic flows along the valleys on the eastern and western coast at approximately 4:15 am.
