(CMR) An explosive eruption began at the La Soufriere volcano in St Vincent at about 8:40 am on Friday sending a two-mile high cloud of ashes above the island.
The eruption which was described as imminent by scientists on Thursday, occurred hours after the island was placed on red alert, with mandatory evacuation ordered for thousands of people.
Several countries, including Barbados and St Lucia, have offered to assist St Vincent and the Grenadines.
Royal Cruise Line and Celebrity Cruises have sent ships to St Vincent to assist with evacuation.
However, many are worried that the pandemic could hamper evacuation efforts because cruise ships and islands such as Barbados require evacuees to be vaccinated.
Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves said he was working with other Caribbean governments to ensure that they could accept an ID card since not everyone has a passport.
