(CMR) The Cayman Islands Fire Service (CIFS) said it would continue to work alongside colleagues from the Department of Environmental Health to make good progress excavating and extinguishing deep-seated pockets of fire at the George Town landfill using safe systems of work.
This will continue throughout the evening with some variation in smoke plume size and intensity. Residents and businesses affected are reminded to keep doors and windows closed and avoid the smoke plume where possible.
A further update will be provided tomorrow morning.
A large fire broke out at the landfill Thursday morning, causing a large blanket of black smoke in the area.
Cayman Islands International School had to be evacuated, and the Harquail Bypass closed as the fire raged for hours.
