(CMR) The organizers at the Inter-Scholastic Sports Day at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex had to deal with some young adults fighting earlier in the afternoon which eventually escalated to a mother fighting several of them in order to defend her son. The police are currently investigating the matter after receiving a report of the altercation.
The fight first broke out in the athlete's section of the Mackie Seymour Grandstand between two young men and quickly escalated with others joining in. CMR caught the footage of the incident as others also shared their clips with us. Ironically, George Town Central MP Kenneth Bryan was on location and he quickly leaped to action to assist in dispersing the teens. He expressed his disappointment in both the fighting teens and lack of supervision for the public school's students.
The private school participants appeared well behaved in not involved in the altercations at all.
Several eyewitnesses shared that two young men from Clifton Hunter were fighting who had a tumultuous relationship as sometimes “they were as close as brothers and other times fighting like cats and dogs.”
It quickly became apparent that a lack of security in the stands was an issue.
Another contributing factor was the complete lack of control for that area of the complex where uninvited persons were able to access the facility through an unlocked and unmanned gate. In fact, adults came into the far side of the complex behind the Mackie Seymour stand and parked off there. Concerned parents complained that high school girls were observed dancing on car tops and sitting in vehicles with adult men.
On location police officers quickly descended on the stand and attempted to separate the children and remove non-athletes from that area – instructing them to return to the visitors stand. However, at the far end of the fence young men could be observed jumping back over the fence to return to the complex. The fights then escalated into the parking lot of the complete with a mother getting involved in defending her son against several other young men.
She can be observed barefoot and getting ready to “box” a child before police intervened. The RCIPS eventually dispatched additional task force officers to the location and have confirmed that no arrests have been made.
Schools fights have been an ongoing concern that appears to be inadequately addressed by the education department and ministry.
