(CMR) The Turks and Caicos Islands has a new government after the Progressive National Party (PNP) defeated the ruling party People’s Democratic Movement (PDM) in the general election on Friday.
The PNP will govern the British overseas territory for the next four years after a landslide victory, winning 14 of the 15 seats.
Thirty-eight candidates battled for 10 district seats and five all-island seats in the House of Assembly. Both the PNP and the PDM had 15 nominees in the 2021 general election.
There were seven independent candidates, and the Progressive Democratic Alliance (PDA) had one candidate running for one of the all-island seats in parliament.
The election was held with strict COVID-19 protocols put in place by the Ministry of Health.
These included strict six-foot distances between voters and staff, mandatory mask-wearing, individual pencils, free hand sanitizer, and personal protective equipment for all poll workers.
Elections were last held in this British Overseas Territory on December 15, 2016, when the People's Democratic Movement (PDM) won a 10-5 victory over the Progressive National Party (PNP).
Leader of the PDM Sharlene Cartwright Robinson, the country's first female premier, called the general election early last month.
