Displaced tourism stipend payment late … again!

Tourism stipend payments late

(CMR) The February displaced tourism stipend payment is once again late leaving many to wonder who they will make ends meet. One individual shared that because of the delayed payment they could be facing eviction from their apartment as bills are mounting.

In the past, most payments have been received by the 14 day of each month but late payments have occurred before.

Several persons have reached out to CMR to indicate that payments had not been received by Monday afternoon. Despite that, Premier Alden McLaughlin had promised one person that they would be receiving the funds by Monday evening at the latest.

However, CMR understands that by Tuesday morning stipend recipients contacting the call center for an update were informed that payments could be available on Thursday or sometime next week.

In October 2020 payments were also delayed with no explanation provided. The government extended the tourism stipend program for an additional six months in December allowing tourism workers to be able to have funds through until June 2021. They also increased the amount by $500 in early January and temporarily re-opened the application process for new applicants to apply.

The tourism sector will largely remain closed for the foreseeable future in the Cayman Islands due to COVID-19 restrictions.
