(CMR) The number of days travelers to the Cayman Islands are required to quarantine could be reduced to 10 days when at least 90 percent of people over 60 are vaccinated, the premier has announced.
While the quarantine rules could change, Premier Alden McLaughlin said several conditions would determine if people quarantine for 14 days or have their time reduced to 10 days.
People who have a negative COVID-19 PCR test within 72 hours of arrival, as well as a negative test upon arrival at the airport and, have completed a valid COVID-19 vaccination program approved by the chief medical officer will be allowed to quarantine for 10 days; however, and they must be staying in a household where all persons have been fully vaccinated, McLaughlin said.
Members of the household who did not travel and have been vaccinated will not be required to quarantine.
McLaughlin said adults traveling with children would have to continue to quarantine for 14 days until children start receiving the vaccine.
He said a negative PCR test on day 10 would also be needed before persons are allowed to leave quarantine.
“Whilst I am sure that this is welcomed news for many in our community, for some there will be concerns, while for others it may not seem enough. For those with concerns, I implore you to get vaccinated. We cannot remain closed forever,” Premier McLaughlin said.
He said the decision to reduce quarantine time for travelers was made with the public's health considered.
“I know that the reduction in the quarantine period still does not encourage tourism. But if I could liken this to the period last year when we were opening back our local economy in phases, this is but the first safe step. Just as we did last year, we are patiently opening bit by bit as we gain confidence in our safety…We cannot be careless and allow COVID-19 back in our midst,” McLaughlin added.
He said the government would evaluate its next step based on the local and international situation.
Chief Medical Officer Dr. John Lee said so far, 11,856 people have been vaccinated, with 3939 of these people receiving two doses.
Approximately 2300 more people over 60 need to be vaccinated to reach a target of 90 percent or 5,000 people.
