(CMR) US President Donald Trump became the first president in America's history to be impeached twice after the House voted 232 to 197 on Wednesday to have him impeached.
There were 10 Republicans among those who agreed with charging the president with “incitement of insurrection” for his role in the violent riot by a mob in the US Capitol last Wednesday.
The riot, which disrupted proceedings to affirm President-elect Joe Biden's victory, left five people dead.
In the impeachment article introduced on Monday, lawmakers said Trump “threatened the integrity of the Democratic system, interfered with the peaceful transition of power, and imperiled a coequal branch of Government.”
The article said Trump betrayed his trust as President and that he “demonstrated that he would remain a threat to national security, democracy, and the Constitution if allowed to remain in office.”
The House was expected to send the article of impeachment to the Senate to begin the process of holding a trial to determine whether to convict Trump and bar him from running for office again.
However, President Trump's removal from office before the official inauguration of Joe Biden next week is unlikely as a trial would not be likely before January 19.
Although Trump would have already left office by then, a vote to convict him could still bar him from holding federal office again.
Trump was impeached in December 2019 for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, making him the third US president to be impeached.
However, he remained in office after the Republican-held Senate acquitted him in February 2020.
