(CMR) After being canceled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Meals on Wheels annual Change for Change Coin Drive will return this month.
Over 200 volunteers are expected to be stationed around Grand Cayman on Friday and Saturday, January 29 and 30, collecting coins, cash, and donations for the charity.
Meals on Wheels (MOW), which will partner with Davenport Development for this coin drive, is encouraging people to “gather up your loose change, empty your coin jar and give from the heart as we come together as a community to raise much-needed funds.”
MOW, in a statement, said,
“Your loose change may not seem like it could make much of a difference, but when the community pulls together it all adds up to make a huge difference to serve those in need.
Despite the challenges faced last year, MOW said it continued to provide meals for people most in need.
The charity said it is hoping to raise enough funds through the community's generous donations to provide over 6,000 nutritious hot meals to seniors and other vulnerable members of the community this year.
General manager of Meals on Wheels, Jennifer West, explained that this year’s coin drive's goal is to raise $35,000, which is the monthly cost to provide meals to the over 315 people served daily.
However, she said MOW needed people to volunteer for two hours to collect enough funds to meet the organization's goals. Volunteers of all ages are welcome to support the fundraiser. West said,
“We sadly had to cancel last year’s coin drive, but we are geared up and ready to go.”
Collection locations include Credit Union, Butterfield branches, Buy Smart, Fosters Supermarkets, Cayman National Banks, Cost U Less, Book Nook, Atlantic Department Store, Atlantic Kids, Kirk Home Centre, Hurley’s Supermarket, A.L. Thompsons, and Kirk Market.
