(CMR) The Cayman Islands Coast Guard marked a historic occasion today as the first 16 recruits starting training after being shortlisted from more than 300 applicants.
They will now face eight weeks of intensive training to prepare for their roles. They are law enforcement officers that are responsible for protecting the borders, ensuring the safety of the boating community, upholding maritime law and ensuring that illegal contraband does not reach Cayman's shores.
Coast Guard Commander Rober Scotland and HE The Governor Martyn Roper welcomed the new recruits. The governor shared:
‘I was delighted to join our excellent Coast Guard Commander Robert Scotland to welcome a group of highly motivated and engaged recruits who want to serve their country. And as sailors the world over say as they embark on a journey, I wish them all “fair winds and following seas”'
