(CMR) The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service said there were almost 250 motor vehicle collisions and that just under 40 people were arrested on suspicion of DUI over the festive season.
The RCIPS also issued over 630 tickets for offenses ranging from speeding, illegal tint, to the use of mobile phones.
Despite these numbers, the police are reporting success in various operations carried out by the RCIPS and Special Constabulary members under Operation Winter Guardian throughout December and the start of 2021.
Acting Superintendent Brad Ebanks, who oversees both Specialist and Uniform Operations, applauded the Arrive Alive 345 Campaign organizers, the National Drug Council, and Hurleys Media for working with the police to help promote responsible driving. Superintendent Ebanks said:
“We also want to thank those members of the public who made a conscious effort to do the right thing by drinking responsibly and utilizing the various options available for staying safe over the holidays, especially on New Year’s Eve.”
The NDC reported that 2,142 persons rode the purple ribbon buses in Grand Cayman and just under 20 in Cayman Brac.
The police said they were pleased that there were no fatalities on the roads but said the continuing number of motor vehicle collisions was a concern and will continue to be a priority.
Meantime, The police are reporting a reduction in burglary, robbery, and theft over the Christmas season. They responded to seven reports of burglary, one robbery, and 46 reports of minor thefts, a reduction in all three categories from the same period the previous year.
There were also six reports of violent incidents at liquor licensed premises, including one serious assault and one death, which has resulted in another man being charged for murder.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Kurt Walton, head of police operations, described the death as unfortunate. He said the investigations required additional personnel, who conducted a very efficient and skilled investigation, which led to the arrest of a foreign national who has since been charged.
DCP Walton said despite that death, “the vast majority of Caymanians and residents were able to enjoy the holidays safely, which our islands are known for, especially following our remarkable success in suppressing COVID-19.”
“We are extremely proud of all members of the RCIPS and Special Constables who worked tirelessly and diligently to ensure that the holidays were safe and peaceful. We also thank our community partners and the members of our community that remained law-abiding and took the opportunity to utilize other modes of transportation to avoid driving while intoxicated,” he added.
