(CMR) Former Commissioner of Lands and Surveys in Belize Wilbert Vallejos was arrested on Monday.
Vallejos, who resigned from his post after 10 years as Commissioner on December 31, was detained during a raid at his home Monday afternoon.
According to Belize's News 5, heavily armed members of the Mobile Interdiction Team descended on Vallejos’ residence in Patchakan Village, Corozal.
Vallejos and his brother were arrested by the officers and taken to the Corozal Police Station pending further instructions.
The police team reportedly found a huge sum of money, including Belize, US, and Mexican currency, at the residence and requested the Financial Intelligence Unit's assistance.
The cash included BZ$65,000 in cash, 10,000 pesos, and US$3,170.
Officers were said to be waiting on the Financial Intelligence Unit to proceed with charges if Vallejos could not prove he came by the monies legitimately.
Vallejos resigned last week for health reasons; he is expected to be succeeded by auctioneer and valuation professional Talbert Brackett.
