A Jamaican soldier in the US Army was one of two persons arrested and charged with the first murder committed in Byram Township, New Jersey, in over 100 years.
Private Jamaal Mellish (23) and a 16-year-old boy are charged with the kidnapping and murder of US Army Corporal Hayden Harris.
The body of Harris (20) was discovered by firefighters buried in a wooded area on Ross Road in Byram, Sussex County, on December 19.
Harris was reported missing a day earlier from the Fort Drum base in New York.
Authorities believe a dispute may be behind the abduction of Harris by Mellish, who drove to his hometown in Brooklyn, New York, where the teen joined him. They then traveled to Byram, where Harris was killed.
His body was found buried under about 200 feet of snow. Firefighters reportedly called police to the scene after seeing blood and several scattered items while on their annual Santa ride through the town.
Mellish and the teen have also been charged with second-degree possession of a weapon without a permit and second-degree possession of weapons for unlawful purposes. The soldier was also charged with third-degree suppression of evidence.
