(CMR) Jamaica's Chairman of the North East Regional Health Authority (NERHA), senior party organizer and businessman Tyrone Robinson has died from COVID-19 complications whilst visiting his mother in Miami, Florida. It is understood he had pre-existing conditions and passed away around 11:30 p.m. Friday night.
The 58-year-old businessman and influential political activist had been ill for several weeks with COVID-19 and had developed complications from the disease. He was placed on a ventilator and said to be in critical condition for several weeks.
He was a senior party organizer for the JLP prompting Prime Minister and JLP leader Andrew Holness to issue a press statement this sharing:
“The Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) is deeply saddened at the passing of businessman and one of its key political organizers, Tyrone Robinson.
Tyrone was not only a key stalwart for the JLP who gave yeoman's service, particularly in the northern belt of the island, he was committed to the development of his country through service on several public boards including being chairman of the North East Regional Health Authority up until the time of his death.”
Robinson was a political force in the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) and assisted Prime Minister Andrew Holness in winning against Audley Shaw in 2013. He was also said to be the key political figure for JPL's campaign efforts in their St. Ann North Eastern constituency for the better half of 20 years.
A professional pilot he owned a construction business and was also involved in mining and farming. He served as the NERHA chairman since 2007.
His wife was the former Minister of Labour and Social Security, MP Shahine Robinson. She passed away in May 2020 from cancer.
