(CMR) Tis the season to be merry but be careful. Safety is a top priority in more ways than one, particularly this year when individuals are being urged to pay particular attention to their valuables, as well as, their health.

CMR is sharing tips on how to keep your possessions safe this Christmas season, as well as, how you can prevent the spread of COVID-19 at your holiday gatherings.

Here are 10 tips to consider this year, let us know in the comment section if you have tips of your own that were not included in this list that we could add.

  1. Ensure that valuable personal possessions (e.g. cash and high-end electronic devices) are properly secured or concealed
  2. During the festive season, more persons may be out in public conducting business, it's best to maintain your physical distance.
  3. Keep house and car keys in an easily accessible place to minimize the time it takes to enter homes and vehicles
  4. Avoid potluck-style gatherings, instead, make use of single-use options or identify one person to serve sharable items, like salad dressings, food containers, plates, utensils and condiments.
  5. Walk in well-lit areas and avoid walking alone. If you think you are being followed, trust your instincts and proceed to a crowded area, maintain your vigilance and attend the nearest police station if possible.
  6. Do not leave valuable items on motor vehicle seats or areas within the vehicle that make them visible to passers-by.
  7. When using Automated Teller Machines (ATM) be vigilant, protect your debit/credit card information. Avoid using ATMs in secluded areas.
  8. Consider and prepare for what you will do if you, or someone else, becomes sick during a family visit. What are the plans for isolation and medical care
  9. Avoid contact with anyone who you suspect may be sick.
  10. With all the tasks you may have to do, it is important to wash your hands; hand washing is critical to preventing the spread of germs.
