(CMR) March 2021 is being touted as the date cruise ship passengers will again be welcomed at Jamaica's Montego Bay port.
Acting Chief Public Health Inspector Sherika Lewis made the revelation, noting that March 2021 was a date that was discussed in a recent stakeholder meeting.
“The seaport is slated for reopening in March of next year. We had a stakeholder meeting on December 1 where we discussed all the parameters needed to ensure the safe arrival of the cruise vessels come next year, ” said Lewis.
The cruise ship industry has been particularly hard hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, with an order in March 2020 banning vessels from sailing.
The seven-month ban was finally lifted in late October 2020, however cruise vessels are yet to return to the Caribbean, with ports in the region still closed.
Since the start of the year Jamaica had only welcomed 450,002 cruise passengers, the country ordinarily records in excess of a million cruise visitors.
