(CMR) The Cayman Islands Watercraft Association (CIWA) has announced that it will be taking disciplinary action against local rider Vanjae “VJ” Ramgeet – after his girlfriend breached COVID-19 quarantine provisions yesterday.
CIWA's board will be meeting soon to decide what the disciplinary action will entail.
The association also apologized for the breach that occurred at their event assuring sponsors that this was not in keeping with their remit of safety first.
It was revealed yesterday on Cayman Marl Road that Skylar Mack came to the Cayman Islands in order to attend the CIWA event that was held yesterday at South Sound Beach that Ramgeet was riding in.
Skylar will be subjected to the COVID-19 regulations and fines but many were calling for Ramgeet to also be penalized for allowing her to attend the event fully cognizant of the fact that she had recently arrived on the island.
Many felt that there was no way for her to attend the event without him knowing and permitting her to do so. Sources indicate that she was staying alone at a property in Newlands that belongs to his family. She has since been taken to a government quarantine facility at her own expense.
In a press statement issued today, they have shared that CIWA was instrumental in reporting Mack to the authorities once they realized she was at the event. Gary Whittaker, president of CIWA, shared that:
“I would like to make it abundantly clear to our riders, officials and the general public who were in attendance that safety is always the number one priority at our events, regardless of whether it's on the water or on-land.”
Anyone who may have been in contact with Mack is encouraged to make contact with the Public Health Department to assist with their contact tracing.
Yesterday's race was the last of the short 2020 watercraft season.
