(CMR) All schools in the Cayman Islands have been instructed to close tomorrow as a result of the Cayman Islands being placed under storm watch this afternoon at 4:00 p.m. as a result of Tropical Depression Eta.
Earlier the Minister for Education, Youth, Sports, Agriculture and Lands Honourable Juliana O’Connor-Connolly, has advised that government schools will close tomorrow, Friday November 6 due to the inclement weather. Parents of students in private schools and preschools will be contacted by those institutions to be advised on plans for tomorrow.
It appears that all private schools have thus far taken the position to close as well.
The decision was made after the weather bulletins from the Cayman Islands National Weather Service, the latest of which has placed the Cayman Islands under a Flood Warning with a projected 5 to 10 inches of rain as a result of Tropical Depression Eta.
The decision was taken to close schools out of an abundance of caution. Department of Education Services personnel will also work from home on Friday to allow necessary building repairs to take place.
Schools have been advised to take all necessary precautions to secure their facilities to mitigate any damage that may occur due to the heavy rains. School Leaders, teachers, parents and the general public will be advised of any further steps that may need to be taken if Tropical Depression Eta develops further.
The governments of Nicaragua and Honduras continue to issue warnings on heavy rain and flooding in those countries, and interests in Nicaragua and Honduras should continue to monitor the progress of this system. Interests in Belize, western Cuba, and the Cayman Islands should also monitor the progress of this system, as Tropical Storm watches may be required later today or tonight for portions of these areas.
Cayman is expected to start having thunderstorm conditions within 48 hours with the possibility of 10 inches of rain tomorrow.
