(CMR) A recent uptick in robberies in Jamaica has left some drivers contracted to transport call centre workers vowing to boycott some routes.
At least one driver speaking to a local Jamaica media house revealed that an incident last Friday left him pretty shaken up and considering avoiding certain communities due to a flare-up in violence and robberies.
According to the driver, he was transporting a call centre worker to her home in the east Kingston community of Dunkirk.
The driver said upon arriving in the community and attempting to drop off the worker, several men bearing high powered rifles, blocked off a section of the roadway and demanded that he stop the bus.
He said upon attempting to reverse and back away from the area, the men, which he said was approximately six of them began shooting at the bus.
According to the driver, he lost control of the vehicle with six staff members aboard.
The attack resulted in the driver being shot in the head and a traveller also shot in the ordeal.
The driver said the incident has forced him to contemplate the safety of his profession noting that he is considering axing the Dunkirk community from the group of routes he services; and he is not the only one.
A similar incident a few weeks aback forced a driver to pull out of his contract with a call centre, noting that the low-income communities in which many agents live, where just not safe to traverse.
The driver revealed that his bus was shot up while transporting call centre staff to a rural community near Papine.
