(CMR) A Guyanese-American man is suing Caribbean Airlines Limited (CAL) for an undisclosed sum of money after drugs was found in his luggage on his return to the United States in 2018 from a trip to his native Guyana.
50-year-old Simeon Wilson, a janitor in the US, went to Guyana in October 2018 to visit his elderly father for his birthday.
It is a trip that subsequently led to him being jailed, saw him hauled before a court and ultimately left him unemployed.
According to Wilson, his 5 hour flight from Cheddi Jagan Airport to John F Kennedy Airport (JFK), was exhausting as it was an overnight flight.
However, when he arrived at JFK he said that he noticed that someone had placed a tie around his suitcase, something that was not there when he dropped his baggage at Cheddi Jagan and boarded the flight.
Wilson later said he was stopped by US Customs agents and arrested after 2,000 grams of cocaine was found in his two bags.
Despite the charges later being dropped after it was determined that Wilson's bag had indeed been tampered with while in the custody of the airline , Wilson revealed that events not only left him unemployed but ruined his good name in the Caribbean- American community in which he lived.
Wilson said that even now, he is flagged by officials when travelling, often pulled aside and searched, following the incident, which has forced him to walk with documents to prove that his case had been dropped.
“I travel with my two hands. I don’t bring no suitcase at all. Nobody can screw with me anymore,” Wilson told the NY Post.
