“It's shameful that Donald Trump ducked the only debate in which the voters get to ask the questions — but it's no surprise.”
Biden campaign spokesman Andrew Bates
(CMR) The Commission on Presidential Debates announced on Friday that he second presidential debate between Donald Trump and Joe Biden would be canceled after Trump refused to participate in a virtual debate.
The organizers decided on a virtual debate after Trump's recent COVID-19 diagnosis. For the past two days, Trump has made it clear he would not be participating in the October 15 debate.
The commission, with the backing of their health advisers, announced on Thursday morning that — because Trump tested positive for the coronavirus — the debate that was scheduled for Miami would be held virtually, with the two candidates appearing from remote locations.
Trump proposed delaying the dates by an entire week but the critics noted the scheduling was not up to him to set but a role of the commission.
ABC news had indicated that Biden will be holding a town hall meeting instead.
The third and final debate is scheduled for October 22 in Nashville, Tennessee.
