“We are known to be a community of Caymakind but unfortunately a small number of people in our community of falling below acceptable standards of behavior.”
HE Governor Martyn Roper
(CMR) HE Governor Martyn Roper expressed his disappointment with recent WhatsApp and social media posts about the Civil Partnership Law (CPL). He has called on the Cayman community to “treat everybody with courtesy, dignity and respect” and think twice before posting anything that might offend others.
His comments were made during Friday's press briefing when he also confirmed that some of the more disturbing messages have been referred to the police for investigation. He said the messages are “deeply irresponsible” and that he found them to be “quite shocking”. Whilst he would not address the comments in any great detail and stressed he was not going to single out any individuals or organizations he was calling on both sides to be more responsible.
He pleaded with people on both sides of the debate to consider the larger impact of the commentntes on the Cayman Islands. The governor stressed the importance of considering our international reputation for people who may be monitoring the development of this situation overseas. Calling on all to remember the CaymanKind spirit he ended with his belief that it is just a small number of persons being disruptive in the wider community.
