(CMR) Heavy rainfall and flooding of low lying areas are anticipated for the Cayman Islands as a tropical disturbance passes to the south of the island.
Earlier on Tuesday (September 1) the National Hurricane Center issued an advisory for tropical cyclone 16.
At 10 am local time, the disturbance was centered near latitude 16.1 North, longitude 77.5 West. It is expected to pass south of the Cayman Islands.
The Cayman Islands National Weather Service stated that heavy rainfall and flooding of low lying areas is possible for the Cayman Islands beginning this afternoon.
A tropical storm watch is in effect for the Bay Islands and the Northern coast of Honduras.
Maximum sustained winds associated with the disturbance are near 40 mph with higher gusts.
Additional development is expected today and on Wednesday, and a tropical depression or tropical storm could form at any time.
The threat to the Cayman Islands is low at this time but residents should continue to monitor the progress of potential tropical cyclone 16 as it tracks westward to the south of the Cayman Islands area.
