(CMR)Following a spike in COVID-19 cases, Cuba announced new curfew measures to contain the spread of the virus.
According to the latest figures out of Cuba's health ministry, the country saw a spike of 269 new COVID-19 cases last week, the highest tally since the start of the pandemic.
The new measures which include, a daily curfew and, the general restriction of movement comes into effect on September 1.
The new curfew times are 7pm to 5am.
Havana Governor Reinaldo García Zapata explained that inter-provincial travel would be suspended with a framework established to ensure that only essential workers that work in the capital are deemed exceptional.
Zapata said the government would reassess the impact of the new measures after 15 days.
Despite the new semi-lock-down measures, the country is proceeding full steam ahead with the first stage of a clinical trial for a COVID-19 vaccine.
“Achieving an effective vaccine against COVID-19 is a priority for our entire science and innovation system at BioCubaFarma. Today we see how solid and accelerated progress has been made in this project in the Finlay Institute,” said Eduardo Martínez, president of the BioCubaFarma, shortly after the trials started on August 24
The clinical trial is expected to be completed on January 11, 2021 and results will be published the following month in February.

The latest figures out of Cuba showed that the country had recorded 48 new COVID-cases which bringing the total number of positive cases to 3,973.
