(CMR) Premier of Bermuda, David Burt announced that Bermudians will be heading to the polls to vote come October 1.
General elections in the British Overseas Territory (BOT) are not constitutionally due for another two years however, Burt said that it was fiscally responsible to call the elections in October rather than to hold by-elections.
““I chose the option that saves Bermudian taxpayers money. I also thought about the 20 months of bickering that a series of by-elections would bring,” said Burt as he offered an explanation for his decision.
Burt further said that calling the elections now will mean that the government can focus its attention on rebuilding the island's battered economy.
Bermuda's national debt is close to three billion US dollars, a lot of which the country's technocrats have attributed to the pandemic.
Bermudians last went to the polls for a general election in July 2017 when the ruling Progressive Labour Party (PLP) defeated the One Bermuda Alliance (OBA) by 24 to 12 seats.
