(CMR) Minister of Education Julianna O'Connor-Connolly has confirmed that all teachers in the Cayman Islands will now be making a minimum wage of CI$5,000 per month. The announcement was made and confirmed last week at the annual educator's welcome event held on Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac to kick-off the upcoming academic year.
The minister confirmed that she was fulfilling a promise made over two years ago to ensure that all teachers received “a liveable national wage which I deem to be $5,000”. She did specify it can be more than that but no less than the $5,000. This will no doubt be a welcomed bit of news for government teachers who continued to work through the COVID-19 pandemic under rather challenging circumstances.
The wage increase will be applied just in time for the new year and comes into effect on September 1 after the minister confirmed that the two-stage cycle has now been completed.
