(CMR) Jamaicans are now on election watch following Prime Minister Andrew Holness' latest indication that he would soon announce the date for the upcoming General Elections which are constitutionally due before June 21, 2021.
It is understood that Holness indicated that his Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) administration was prepared, as the party had now selected its 63 candidates who would be contesting in the elections.
While it was expected that the PM would have disclosed the date of the elections at a meeting of the party's Central Executive at the Montego Bay Convention Centre on Sunday (August 9), Holness held off only telling his audience that he would make the announcement “soon soon”.
A source from inside the JLP further revealed that the meeting's main aim was to sensitise party members to new the realities of campaigning, brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as reiterate campaign financing regulations.
During a post meeting press briefing, JLP General Secretary Dr. Horace Chang reiterated that no election will be held while states of emergency are still active.
Speculations are ripe that the elections may be announced during a meeting of the House of Representatives on Tuesday (August 11).
