(CMR) Some stranded Nicaraguans returned home today on a Cayman Airways repatriation flight to the Augusto C. Sandino International Airport. The successful repatriation flight finally took off after an almost four-month delay with the unwavering assistance from the Governor's office.
Nicaragua's Ministry of Interior confirmed that 31 men and 35 women who were left stranded successfully arrived in Managua this morning on KX 3070 at 10.35 a.m.
The governor announced on his page that they were in constant communication with the officials in Nicaragua and were finally granted permission for the flight. Cayman's ARK, an anonymous donor and R3 Cayman Foundation were all instrumental in organizing in paying for the flights.
Upon arrival at the Augusto C. Sandino International Airport, the group was required to present their negative COVID-19 PCR test certificates; they were checked for fever and respiratory symptoms related to the virus and were placed under a 14-day home quarantine.
The move to close the borders in Nicaragua with no notice leaving thousands stranded all over the world was met with protest across that country.
CMR understands that some 160 Nicaraguans were stranded in Cayman after many businesses shut down as a result of the coronavirus provisions in March.
