(CMR) The Cayman Islands has run out of cement on the island and only has a few small bags left halting major projects for some of the island's largest construction companies. The shortage is largely due to an unanticipated demand based on increased construction over the past month.
The demand for cement is said to have increased around 25-30% in the month of June alone and is anticipated to continue on this forecast over the next 6 months. This along with last week's story in the Gulf of Mexico has delayed shipments coming in and caused a shortage of the in-demand substance. However, National Cement anticipates a shipment by the middle of next week.
The information was received earlier today and CMR visited several concrete companies as well as National Cement, the only provider of cement in the Cayman Islands. Concrete is made from three key ingredients which include cement. The local supplier has placed restrictions in place for how much any one local company could purchase from them during the shortage.
It is understood that we currently get our cement out of Mexico due to an existing import restriction, There is currently a prohibition on the importation of cement from certain countries under the Customs (Prohibited Goods) Order (2017 Revision).
CMR understands that requests have been made for the past several years to review the list of approved destinations for building-grade cement products as well as other options to address the ongoing concerns about sourcing cement for the island.
