(CMR) Today is World Mangrove Day.
To mark the occasion, the Cayman Islands is set to launch a Mangrove Ranger Program.
The aim of the program is to recruit and train young Caymanians who want to protect the island's central mangrove environment to help create a sustainable future for Cayman.
The rangers will also be responsible for raising community awareness and collecting vital data, as well as, monitoring mangrove destruction through illegal removal and development.
It is estimated that in the last 40 years Cayman has lost 60% of its mangroves, most of which can be found in our Central Mangrove Wetland (CMW) ecosystem.
The new Ranger Programme will work in conjunction with a government adopted species conservation plan which was implemented in March of this year.
World Mangrove Day is a part of the International Day for the Conservation of wetland ecosystem and was adopted by the General Conference of UNESCO in 2015.
The day “aims to raise awareness of the importance of mangrove ecosystems as a unique, special and vulnerable ecosystem and to promote solutions for their sustainable management, conservation and uses.”
