(CMR) The Cayman Islands National Weather Service (CINWS) on Thursday (June 9) issued a revised 2020 Hurricane Season prediction.
CINWS said the update was necessary as one of the sources the service uses, namely the Colorado State University, had adjusted their prediction to reflect an increase in named storms.
The Colorado State University predicts a slightly above-normal season with as many as 20 named storms and up to 8 major hurricanes.
While hurricane season began on June 1, predictions are that the second half of the season is when the more serious storms are likely to form.
“Three problems with these late-season storms forming the western Caribbean include possible short warning times, erratic paths, and the potential for rapid intensification, “said CINWS in a release.
According to CINWS late-season storms can catch residents off guard, and warned that residents should always be prepared for a major storm, especially in the latter part of the season.
“Two agencies that work closely together as part of the National Early Warning System are the Cayman Islands National Weather Service and Hazards Management Cayman Islands (HMCI). The main roles of the Cayman Islands National Weather Service during the hurricane season is in monitoring the formation and monitoring the progress of systems; warning the public when these systems become a threat; and provide guidance on the impacts of major storms, ” explained the CINWS in its release.
The CINWS release also went on to explain the HMCI which is it said had overall responsibility for the National Emergency Operations Centre.
