(CMR) The United States surpassed 50,000 new coronavirus cases in a single today on Thursday as both the country and many states set new daily case records for the sixth time in nine days. Florida has also set a new record suppressing over 10,000 cases according to reports.
More than 8,200 cases were announced Thursday in California, the state’s highest single-day total. These numbers are of particular concern as the country prepares to celebrate it's annual July 4th holiday in just two days.
This alarming new milestone came as some of the country’s most populous states reported major surges, and as public health officials scrambled to limit the damage. At least eight states reported single-day case records on Thursday: Alaska, Arkansas, California, Florida, Georgia, Montana, South Carolina and Tennessee.
The Florida Department of Health says the number of known cases of COVID-19 in the state rose by 10,109 since yesterday morning as the virus spreads and as more people are tested across the state. The total number of cases in Florida is now 169,106.
Thursday’s reported total was an 87 percent increase in daily cases from two weeks ago, when states were reopening after extensive lockdowns eased the outbreak, particularly in the hard-hit Northeast.
Now the surge in cases has shifted to the South and the West, as the nation staggers toward a holiday weekend burdened by a pandemic that threatens to keep growing worse.
The number of Florida resident deaths has reached 3,617, an increase of 67 since Wednesday's update. Another 101 non-Floridians have died in the state. Of the 169,106 cases,166,303 are Florida residents while 2,803 are non-Florida residents currently in the state. A total of 2,033,794 people have been tested in the state as of Thursday — about 9.3% of the state's population — according to the Florida Department of Health.
President Donald Trump said he’d wear a mask if he were “in a tight situation with people” but that he’s not convinced they should be required even as coronavirus cases are spiking in parts of the U.S. Trump said that if we were in a group of people, he would wear one but that usually everyone around him is tested for the coronavirus. Since the pandemic began, Trump has resisted wearing a mask even when he stands near others, and was criticized for holding a rally last month at an indoor arena in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where masks weren’t required.
