(CMR) Guyana is to get a new president following a recount of ballots from the country's March 2 Elections.
The current Opposition leader Irfaan Ali was declared to be the winner at the polls, following the re-count exercise which was completed on Sunday in the presence of observers from CARICOM and other international organizations.
The recount concluded that the People’s Progressive Party, led by Ali, beat President David Granger’s APNU+AFC by over 15,416 votes.
The Chair of the Guyana Elections Commission has not yet declared the results of the recount which is said to reflect the will of the Guyanese people.
The Organization of American States has since called on the head of Guyana’s elections commission to declare the country’s opposition the winner of the disputed March 2 regional and presidential vote, and for President David Granger to hand over power.
