(CMR) It was announced earlier today that Rena Lalgie, the first black Governor of Bermuda will take up the post later this year. She will also be the first female governor to serve in the position when she takes from John Rankin CMG in December.
Lalgie shared that:
“I am immensely proud that I will serve Bermuda as its first female Governor. The island rightly has a reputation as a beautiful place to live and a great environment in which business can flourish. It is a first-class legal jurisdiction with some of the highest international standards in combatting financial crime.”
The mother-of-two is currently the director of the Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation in the United Kingdom’s treasury. She has worked in the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills, including as the deputy director for Information Economy and cybersecurity. Lalgie served as a Justice of the Peace for eight years until 2015 and was the head of Counter-terrorism and Security Review in the Treasury from 2007 to 2008.
She shared that her family is looking forward to contributing to life in Bermuda “as they get to know the people and culture.”
Government House added that Rankin will transfer to another appointment in the Diplomatic Service.
Bermuda is one of 14 remaining British Overseas Territories.
