(CMR) Education Minister Julianna O’Connor Connolly is the latest victim of a prolific internet scam endorsing the use of cryptocurrency trading.
The scam, which has in recent times seen celebrities, among other trusted members of society, falsely advertised as endorsers of the platform.
In O’Connor Connolly's case, a fake news story is convincingly designed to look like a page from one of the island's oldest publications, the Cayman Compass- however, the website is called ” Cayman Compas”
The Minister is quoted in the fake news story as supposedly promoting the cryptocurrency, as one of the tools she used to build her wealth.
The fake story also goes on to quote from another media outlet which has not been operational in the Cayman Islands since 2019.
Cryptocurrency scams have been rising in popularity, partially due to the coronavirus pandemic and the major fluctuations in crypto prices.
