(CMR) A CNN correspondent who was arrested with members of his crew while broadcasting about the violent protests in Minneapolis has been released from police custody.
State police detained CNN correspondent Omar Jimenez, his producer, and a photojournalist shortly after 5 a.m. CT (6 a.m. ET), as Jimenez was reporting live from a street south of downtown, in the vicinity in which the police precinct building was earlier set ablaze.
During a clip of Jimenez's arrest, viewers could hear the journalist questioning the officer as to why he was under arrest.
CNN has disputed the police’s account of the incident.
CNN further called the arrests a “clear violation of their First Amendment rights” in a tweet.
The First Amendment to the US constitution protects freedom of speech and of association.
The Minneapolis State Patrol confirmed the arrests and said those detained were released “once they were confirmed to be members of the media”.
