(CMR) The Cayman Islands ranks second behind Jamaica in the English speaking Caribbean, as it relates to the number of tests conducted for COVID-19.
To date, the island has tested 3,050 individuals while Jamaica has conducted over 7,000 tests.
Cayman has however surpassed Jamaica to take the top spot in terms of the number of tests per population, at 46,000 per million.
Jamaica is ranked ninth with a figure of 2,024 per million. Jamaica has a population of 2.9 million, while the Cayman Islands has a population of 65,604.
Bermuda and Barbados rank third and fourth respectively, as they have tested 2,980 and 2,629 as of May 7.
Other countries in the region while reporting a low number of confirmed coronavirus cases aren’t testing as aggressively, something which some in the region say could prove problematic in the future.
Premier Alden McLaughlin speaking at a digital press conference on Monday (May 11) said that testing was a critical tool that informs the government’s decision on matters relating to the reopening of the economy.
Mc Laughlin further said that he plans to further ramp up testing capacity, so a greater volume of people can be tested daily.
