(CMR) The Cayman Islands on Monday (May 11) recorded three new cases of the coronavirus bring the island's tally to 84.
Dr. Samuel Williams Rodruigez made the disclosure while speaking at the daily COVID-19 press conference.
Rodruigez further revealed that the island had tested 4,188 people and plans to increase testing to over 400 per day.
Premier Alden McLaughlin said that the latest results were encouraging but continued to stress the need for more testing and patience as it relates to the reopening of the economy.
“The results over the weekend I think are very, very encouraging. That many negatives is something that is very positive,” said McLaughlin.
” But I think we also need to bare in mind that there are three positives results, two of which are frontline staff – and that underlines the importance of the exercise we are carrying out, in trying to test as many of the frontline staff -people who are exposed on a daily basis to a number of other people,” added Mclaughlin.
McLaughlin went on to stress that a critical component of the government's strategy was testing, which he said would be crucial to the reopening of the economy.
“Most of these individuals are asymptomatic, again something that should give us pause when we agitate – as so many people are – for a swift release of all of the current restrictions and the complete reopening of the economy,” said McLaughlin.
“The testing has always been a key component of the government's strategy to be able to reopen the economy safely. And we are doing everything we can to ramp up the ability of the systems to be able to deliver more results, we are aiming for significantly more than the 450 that Dr. Williams Rodruigez spoke about but there are some capacity issues,”added McLaughlin.
